Year 1

Welcome to Year 1! Throughout the year, we have the opportunity to become immersed in our power of reading books ‘Traction Man’, ‘Super Duper You’ and ‘Farmer Duck’. Through these books, we will be creating imaginative stories and will be learning about the importance of friendship. Using our PSHE scheme ‘Jigsaw’, children in Year 1 will explore the importance of being unique, creating goals, being healthy and active and celebrating differences.

In the Autumn term, the children in Year 1 learn about the human body parts and the senses that are associated with. The children also get to explore human and physical features of their local area. Following on from this, we host a nature day whereby the children immerse themselves in creating hedgehog houses, designing insect homes and identifying plants and flowers around Echelford.

In the Spring term, the children in Year 1 go back in time learning about toys in the past and comparing them to toys in the present with our topic ‘Toys through time’. We are lucky to have a visit from Chertsey Museum to learn all the information about toys in the past. The children in Year 1 also get to visit Ashford Church in the spring term through our topic of ‘The famous royalty’.

In the Summer term,  we have the opportunity to expand our Science knowledge through an exciting trip to The Look Out Discovery Centre in Bracknell. Children will get to investigate and explore the science zones as they visit the different parts of the centre. We also take part in a range of fun-filled interactive Science shows. Towards the end of their time in Year 1, children will get to enjoy our topic ‘Besides the seaside’ where they look at different seasonal changes and participate in a seaside drama workshop.

Throughout Years 1-6 the learning is focused on mastering the end of year objectives set out in the 2014 National Curriculum. In Years 1 & 2 the children follow the Key Stage 1 programmes of study as outlined in the National Curriculum and in Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 they follow the Key Stage 2 programmes. The National Curriculum for both key stages consists of the core subjects: Mathematics, English, Science and Computing; and the foundation subjects; History, Geography, Design & Technology, Art and Design, Music, and P.E. The Surrey Agreed Syllabus is used for the teaching of Religious Studies (R.S).

Children are taught in mixed ability classes throughout the school. They progress through the classes according to age except in very exceptional instances where the individual needs of the child make an alternative programme necessary.
