This week, Year 1 had an exciting visit from Chertsey Museum! They brought a range of toys from the past for us to explore such as old dolls, cars and spinning tops. We continued this learning within our History lessons by researching how toys have changed using books, fact sheets, old videos and ipads to support our research. In maths this week, Year 1 have been looking at numbers within 20 and exploring each number and how it is represented in different ways. In Literacy this week, we have focussed on our text ‘Lost in the Toy Museum’ and describing the toys in our story. Phonics: This week we have looked at our new tricky words, ‘their, people, oh and your’ and we’ve explored which other graphemes can make the ‘oo’ sound. |
08/11/24 | This week in Year 1, we have been searching for all of the toys in our new book ‘Lost in the Toy Museum’. We have used our star words in Maths to decide whether a toy is hiding on top of, under or next to an object. We have also started to look at different toys and how they have changed over time since the Victorian era. Phonics: In phonics this week we have been looking at our tricky words ‘here, today and one’ and focusing on our new sound ‘ur/ ir.’ |
25/10/24 | This week, Year 1 have been looking at Betty Campbell in our Literacy lessons. She was the first black headteacher in Wales and we looked at what a wonderful influence she had on our education system! We located Wales and its capital city Cardiff, using our class map in geography. This week in maths, we have been continuing looking at shapes, and learning all about repeating patterns. Phonics: In phonics we have continued to look at digraphs, trigraphs and our tricky words such as ‘all, are, said, says, the and they.’ |
18/10/2024 | This week in Year 1, we have been looking at the story of The Gigantic Turnip. We have used our oracy skills to retell the story and used key phrases from the book as we told our friends how all of the animals ‘pulled, heaved, tugged and yanked’ the turnip from the ground. In Maths, we have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes and have been on a shape hunt around the school to see if we can recognise them within our environment. In Science, we have been looking at which animals are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores, and what types of food they eat. Phonics: We have been looking at our alternative sounds, recapping our phase 3 and 5 sounds and practising our tricky words ‘all, are, the and they.’ |
11/10/2024 | This week in year 1, we have been learning to subtract by counting back in ones, moving on to exploring different addition and subtraction related facts. We have been able to use the numicon, counters, number lines and Lego to help us with our maths learning. In Literacy, we have been following a salmon's journey upstream as they jump over rapids to escape the hungry bears! We have been focusing on using ‘and’ to connect our two sentences together and looking at the structure of our sentences. In Geography this week, we looked at Wales and recapped the capital cities of the countries in the United Kingdom. Phonics: We have been looking at longer words and spotting the digraphs and trigraphs within them. Our tricky words this week are ‘all, are, I, of, one.’ |
04/10/2024 | This week in Year 1, we have been looking at the lifecycle of a frog and following its journey from frogspawn to frog! Using our new information, we have written sentences based on each stage of a frog's life and used our art skills to show this process using different creative materials. In Maths this week, we have been looking at part whole models and how we can use this to help us write a subtraction equation. Phonics: In phonics this week we have been looking at our Phase 5 sounds, ou, ow, ay and ai. Our tricky words this week have been said, says and you. |
27/09/2024 | This week in Year 1 we have been looking at what happens to the leaves on the trees as our seasons begin to change. We have been writing sentences in literacy learning to show our understanding of the leaves falling and changing colour as we get ready for Autumn. In Maths this week, we have been looking at combining two numbers together and finding the total amount. We have been using our counting skills to count on from a number between 0 and 10 and using different objects around the classroom to help us. In P.E this week, Year 1 have been looking at our balancing skills and how we can move around spaces in different ways. Phonics: In phonics this week we have been looking at longer words and spotting the trigraphs within them. We have continued to look at our tricky words and this week have focused on ‘all, I, are, of, one, today and here’. |
20/09/2024 | This week in Year 1 we met Squirrel from our new book ‘Slow Down’. We read how Squirrel buried her acorns in the autumn to keep them safe, ready for her to eat in the winter. We then wrote sentences and created pictures to show where we would bury our precious items. In Maths, we have been looking at numbers up to 10 and finding one more and one less using large number lines and different natural objects to represent this. We have continued to look at the artist Kathy Pallie in our art learning and have learnt all about how to make sculptures using clay. Phonics: In Phonics this week, we have been looking at words with two or more digraphs and looking at our tricky words what, when and she. |

This week, we have been following the journey of the Gingerbread Man, as he runs ‘as fast as he can’ to get away from all of the animals. We have been impressing our teachers with our sentence writing, including using finger spaces, capital letters and full stops. In Maths, we have been exploring how we represent numbers to 10 and also doubling and halving our numbers. We are all thoroughly enjoying diving into our ‘Fairytale Forest’ themed half term, and we can’t wait to welcome our parents and carers into our classrooms next week. |
